This month, we are celebrating Kindness Month and reflecting on how one moment of generosity can expand far beyond its starting point.
In our October newsletter, we shared the vision of Dr. Leonna Zastrow and her commitment to helping students pursue their education at any stage in life. This month, we are proud to share an exciting update. The Rotary Club of Santa Fe del Sur contributed to Dr. Leonna’s endowment and created an additional endowment in honor of members, expanding support for Santa Fe Community College (SFCC) students.

A Moment of Kindness Can Ripple to Many

Rotary is an international humanitarian organization guided by the motto “Service Above Self.” Members from diverse backgrounds, called Rotarians, come together to make a positive impact in their communities.
The Rotary Club of Santa Fe Del Sur, now part of the Rotary Club of Santa Fe Centro, has supported the community through projects like supplying hygiene kits for individuals experiencing homelessness, Shoes for School drive, the Rotary Youth Leadership Camp, and many others. Their members are eager to jump on each opportunity, and their kindness continues to ripple outward in meaningful ways.

Before the year ended, the Rotarians chose to leave a lasting gift for SFCC students by creating a new endowment and contributing to Dr. Leonna’s existing endowment. Endowments are a powerful way to support students long-term, providing financial assistance year after year to help many students pursue their education.
Marcel Legendre, Rotarian for eight years, reflects on the impact financial support from the Rotary Club has had for students so far. “It has been important for them to have the financial support to complete a degree,” he said. “Without it, they may not have been able to attend college. So it is gratifying and validating to know that it was a good thing to do, the right thing to do.”

In honor of Kindness Month, Dr. Leonna says, “The best thing we can leave to people and our community are moments of kindness. Kindness, to me, is to help with the education so anyone can have the opportunity to take their dreams to the next level.”
